Jack was too sad, moping around the house and meowing a lot. It was breaking our hearts. So, yesterday we adopted Gracie, a 3 month old [3/22/07: oops, just came back from the vet, and she's small for her age, she's actually about 5 1/2 months old] Russian Blue [maybe Burmese? Vet doesn't think likely she's Russian Blue] mix, from the same organization where we had adopted Jack and Niobe. All the photos are below.
If it had just been us and no Jack there is no way we would have gotten another cat so soon. But we had to do this for Jack. It was such a different experience than when we first got Jack and Niobe--bittersweet is how I would have to describe it. It's weird when you're still acutely mourning the loss of another one.
But Gracie is very cute in her Gollum-like way (that was the first name that popped into my head as what she should be called). She kind of looks like a mix between a rat, a bat, Gollum and a kitten. But this is very cute to me! She spent the first night sleeping with us, and she does snuggle and purr VERY loudly. She licks us too which is very endearing. But when she's not in snuggle mode, she is very playful, and doesn't want to be picked up.
She is a cat's cat. She LOVES other cats. Jack is not so sure yet if he wants her love. He has been hissing and growling at her since she arrived, but it's been less and less so. They have had some fun chasing each other and sharing some toys. He's definitely not moping around anymore, but whether he's happy about the new arrival remains to be seen.
Just a few minutes ago, they were actually on the same bed together for the first time without it being a big deal. Gracie, the determined little girl that she is, kept getting up and resettling herself closer and closer to Jack. She got about 8-inches away and meowed 2 times as if to say "please let me snuggle with you!" Then she even got close enough and stretched out her paw and put it on top of his paws.
